Just what the doctor ordered at Leeds Infirmary

 

Project: Leeds General Infirmary

 

Objective: Upgrade of existing hospital central heating and air handling within a large and dated complex to create a far more efficient, responsive and more easily maintained system.

 

Issues: Critically, ensuring optimum temperature and air handling control within hospital operating theatres and wards for patients and staff.

Time-consuming and costly maintenance of existing system.

Minimising disruption over multiple floors, throughout various departments and hospital buildings, the original parts of which were opened in 1869 by the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII.

Scaling within the existing system causing inefficient and costly system performance.


 

Solution: An ongoing central heating system upgrade involving the installation of six MagnaClean Industrial magnetic filters across the entire hospital site.

 

Result: Immediate system improvement following installation to provide responsive temperature control. Crucially, maintenance was undertaken without the need for costly, disruptive and protracted remedial renovation work to replace the system.

 

Verdict: "The MagnaClean units have already been removing high levels of magnetite sludge from the system and this has totally negated the need for far more intrusive and costly maintenance. Based on what we’ve seen already, I’m confident about achieving the temperature levels required. The theatres are the biggest concern, but we’ve been fulfilling the requirements and the transformation in the system has been remarkable."

Central heating boost for social housing

 

Project: Cearns House, East Thames Group

 

Objective: To provide a more cost-effective means of servicing and maintaining, while at the same time extending the life of, central heating systems in varied social residential developments.

 

Issues: As the largest housing association operating in east London and Essex with more than 13,500 homes, East Thames, an RSL, (Registered Social Landlord) has to review maintenance and repair costs in all areas. Central heating system maintenance costs in all properties, particularly older buildings, escalate and require more time and money as the systems age. Replacement of entire systems including associated pipe work is not only extremely costly, but far more disruptive for residents.

 

Solution: Adoption of a preventative approach through the installation of MagnaClean Industrial to provide continuous, in-line, maintenance.

 

Result: Following initial tests, significant sludge deposits have been removed from the system creating improved performance without disruption and the need for system refurbishment. Future monitoring of the system, four times a year, is anticipated to demonstrate a reduction in breakdowns and subsequent call-outs.

 

Verdict: "We’re committed to providing best solutions and best value for all our residents and any initiatives that meet both of these requirements are well received. We’re pleased with the early results. Since the initial installation, three further filters have been installed at similar developments and East Thames Group will be incorporating the use of MagnaClean Industrial within our service maintenance contracts."

"We put two Industrial units to the test on a sizeable heating installation in a large church in Mayfair central London and have found it an excellent solution.
