ADEY’s MagnaClean central heating system filter technology has been put through its paces by a leading industry test centre – And impressed the men in white laboratory coats.

The manufacturer’s advanced domestic MagnaClean TwinTech and MagnaClean Professional filters, which remove virtually 100% of suspended black iron oxide from new and existing central heating systems, underwent a series of intensive thermal and pressure tests.

BSRIA, the leading independent, not-for-profit, UK organisation for testing, certification and performance, conducted the tests on a specially developed rig at its Berkshire centre.

A dozen MagnaClean 22mm filters were subjected to a continuous cycle of testing lasting more than 260 hours. The intensity replicated an automatic system in which the heating came on and went off every ten minutes during which the water temperature was heated up to 110˚C followed by a two minute flow of water at 21˚C. These times were extended to 14 minutes and 12 minutes respectively.

During the course of the thermal testing when temperatures of up to 120˚C were reached, almost 800 cycles were completed at a pressure of just under 2 Bar.

Test Engineer at BSRIA Andrew Freeth was impressed with the product commenting that at no time during the test period did any of the filters leak or suffer any damage as a result of the intense temperature and pressure conditions.

“The TwinTech and Professional filters were set up in a fibre-glass tank for safety reasons which actually made the test conditions hotter and more rigorous, but throughout there were no leaks or cracks evident from any of them and they were all given a brief inspection afterwards before being returned to ADEY for a full examination,” he explained.

“What we created was representative of more than a year of boiler activity with 799 cycles condensed into a short period of time and that’s on the basis that the heating system comes on at least twice a day for 365 days.

“With a standard central heating system, you wouldn’t get temperatures that high. It might get to a maximum of 88 – 90˚C, so the thermal test can be described as quite a shock test for the MagnaClean filters.

“Overall I was very impressed by the product. It was very straightforward to fit and I was also impressed by the level of deposits that the magnets removed from the water in the system on our test rig”, he concluded.
